Days 45-47 – Dunedin to Queenstown
Every trip has it’s bad patch. This was deinitely ours (so far anyway). Don’t expect glorious pictures and happy faces in this post; instead you’ll get lots of rain and cloud and the harsh realities of living in an RV in the winter…
Days 39-44 Christchurch to Dunedin
Our first days in the RV figuring out how it works and enjoying some beautiful sunny weather around the impressive Mount Cook, stunning Lake Pukaki, fossil filled limestone and the city of Dunedin with its wildlife rich peninsula.
Days 37-39 Christchurch and earthquakes
Our being permanently scarred by ‘the cucumber incident’, our first stop in New Zealand was the largest city on the South Island, Christchurch. A small city which has suffered more than its fair share of tragedy over the past few years, with a series of earthquakes in 2010/2011 resulting in 80-90% of the central city area being destroyed, followed up by shootings earlier this year. We only spent a couple of days here but it was education, sobering and uplifting.
Days 32-36 The Shipwreck Coast at Warrnambool to Melbourne
We stayed near Warrnambool for a few days rest and explored the Shipwreck Coast before driving across the third largest volcanic plain in the world to spend our last couple of days in Australia exploring Melbourne.
Days 28-31 The Great Ocean Road
The first half of our week on the Great Ocean Road and around Melbourne, starting with a delayed flight down stranding us in the airport until morning, but also fern filled rainforests, spectacular coastlines and some close encounters with snakes!
Days 23-27 Mackay to Townsville
A final few hundred km up the coast to our northernmost point on this trip; Townsville, calling at Airlie Beach on the way to snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef.
Days 20-22 Rockhampton to Mackay
Three days from Rockhampton doing some caving and then up into the hills behind Mackay, in the Eungella National park hunting for Platypus.
Days 15-19 Brisbane to Rockhampton
Five sunny days which started with a family reunion on Stradbroke Island where we enjoyed lots of beaches and watersports. Then up past the Sunshine Coast to Rockhampton, with a couple of stops for whale watching.
Days 10-14 Byron Bay, the coast and Springbrook
Less travel for this part, with three nights near Byron Bay and another three south of Brisbane. We still explored some stunning forests, but also got out on the golden beaches, swum in a tea tree lake, saw whales and kayaked with dolphins.
Days 5-9 The Blue Mountains and an inland road trip through New South Wales
A few days through the beautiful Blue Mountains, and inland to Byron Bay (on the western side of the mountains) exploring mountains, gorges, caves and forests and experiencing some of the 'real' Australia. Day 5 cont. The road trip across Australia starts...
