Days 86-91 Inle Lake and Yangon
Not the best ending to our time in Myanmar, we didn’t really enjoy Yangon that much (pagoda fatigue?? and the heat) and Inle was rather blighted with illness – I guess travellers gut was inevitable at some point. Still, the Lake is pretty, and we found a crazy cave monastery to explore so it wasn’t all bad!
Days 81-85 Exploring Bagan
We had four days to explore this massive site, home to over 2,000 pagodas. Perhaps the momst famous of Myanmar’s sites, the area was more touristy than we had been used to, but with our e-bikes we escaped most of it and had some of our best days in Myanmar here.
Days 78 (cont) -80 Exploring Mandalay and its many old capitals
We don’t love cities, so only planned to spend a couple of days here in the capital. There’s a lot to see here though, with three old capitals and the main one all displaying ancient pagodas, surrounded by monasteries and with the amazing Ubein bridge to explore.
Day 75-78 Hsipaw and the Gokteik Viaduct by train
After hearing about the ‘most beautiful train ride in the world, which also includes a massive metal viaduct 700m long and 100m tall crossing a valley we knew we had to go. We had planned to travel from Pyin Oo Lwin to Hsipaw by train both there and back, with a few days spent exploring the mountains and local Shan villages of Hsipaw in between. Things rarely go to plan though…
Days 72-74 Pyin Oo Lwin
After arriving into Mandalay airport, we hopped straight in a taxi to the mountain town of Pyin Oo Lwin. A charming town, and a great introduction to the Burmese culture. All in a beautiful setting with a chance to explore stunning waterfalls and forested hills.
Day 66 – 72 Coromandel and the Northlands
Our final days in New Zealand walking in tunnels, through gorges, along beaches, up massive sand dunes and through stands of gigantic Kauri trees. A pretty awesome ending to our time here.
Days 62-65 Rotorua
Our favourite area in New Zealand? Quite possibly!! Ridiculous colour lakes, hot water bubbling from the ground, the satisfying sound of mud pools and some of the most beautiful hills we’ve ever seen!
Days 57-61 Wellington to Waitomo
After exploring the green city of Wellington we headed inland past the volcanoes of Tongariro, to the massive crater lake Taupo and up to the karst country of Waitomo, famed for its glowworm caves.
Days 53-56 Christchurch to Wellington
A few days with a fair amount of travel on coaches and a boat to move between these two cities. We stopped at Kaikoura for a dose of whales, seals and beautiful coastlines though. Oh, and the beach of death…
Day 48-52 Queenstown to Christchurch
Our final days in the RV following our cloudy, grumpy spell turned out to be pretty perfect! Sunny skies, picture perfect lakes and mountains, stunning waterfalls and great walks. Almost made us like the RV in the end….
