Days 132 -133 Champassak
A short post of our couple of days spent in Champassak, a quiet town set along the river south of Pakse. Home to Wat Phu, which is an old ruined Khmer temple like Angkor Wat, many travellers pass this place without stopping. We decided it was worth a stay and weren’t disappointed.
Days 126-131 Vientiane, Tad Lo and Pakse
We only spent a day in the capital before moving on via a 16 hour sleeper bus, tuktuk and local bus to the rural village of Tad Lo on the Bolaven Plateau. A place of waterfalls, local villages and extreme relaxation. We booked to stay two nights here but ended up staying for four as we didn’t want to leave!
Days 121 -125 Vang Vieng
This town once had a reputation as a major party destination, with drugs available in the restaurants and bars, and many accidents on the river. Not somewhere for children… It’s been cleaned up though, and we were one of many families here! The town itself is touristy and uninteresting, but the surrounding mountains and rivers make this a great place for some outdoor fun on a budget.
Days 116-120 Luang Prabang
We had six nights booked here, so there was a lot of pressure for it to be good. Luckily we loved this city, with its wooden French colonnial houses with shutters, winding alleyways and views of the Mekong. We spent five days exploring waterfalls, wandering temples and alleyways, eating, perusing markets and teaching English to Laos children!
Days 114 and 115 From the border to Luang Prabang by boat
We got lucky here, and managed to secure a tour boat for our two day journey down the Mekong to Luang Prabang for not much more than we would have paid with the local transport boat which most travellers take. As this boat was virtually empty, we had a super relaxing few days on the water 🙂
Days 111-113 Chiang Rai and the border crossing to Laos
A few days in the town of Chiang Rai. With lush forests, waterfalls and the most stunning temples we have seen so far, this is a place which should not be missed from anyone’s itinerary.
Day 107-110 Chiang Mai
We’d heard mixed things about this city, and about our accommodation here, but we loved everything about our stay in Chiang Mai! Northern Thailand is beautiful, and there are so many things to do around this city.
Days 102-106 Khao Yai National Park and Ayutthaya
Khao Yai is meant to be one of the best places to spot wildlife in Thailand, although possibly not with the King’s birthday long weekend crowds! We enjoyed the jungle though with walking and kayaking on the lake. Then it was time to return to public transport and visit the ruined temples of Ayutthaya, the old capital of Thailand – before the Burmese attacked and burned it…
Days 97-101 Kanchanaburi
Best known as the site of the Bridge on the River Kwai, there’s a whole load of history here. There are also caves filled with crystals and bats, forests and cascades of waterfalls making this a pretty great place to visit. Especially when you stumble across a random festival!
Days 92-96 Arriving in Bangkok and Sam Roi Yot National Park
The Land of Smiles. It’s certainly very different to Myanmar! We spent our first days in the national parks to the south west of Bangkok, looking for elephants, monkeys and birds, and doing quite a bit of caving too.
